The Guy-Dupré Multifunctional Center is a recreational facility in La Prairie that is used for various purposes by residents and community organizations in the city, in addition to housing administrative offices. In order to meet the growing needs of users, the complex has been expanded and the old facilities have been redesigned.
The Guy-Dupré Multifunctional Center therefore had to be designed so that it could, among other things, host numerous activities offered by the recreation department (sports, music, sewing, painting, cooking, etc.) in addition to providing adequate common areas for exhibitions and cultural and social activities.
Numerous design interventions were carried out according to the specific needs of each activity: acoustic considerations in rooms dedicated to music, access to natural light and good color rendering indices in the choice of lighting fixtures in painting and sewing workshops, diffuse and adjustable lighting and structures for hanging works of art in common rooms, to name but a few. The location of spaces dedicated to certain types of activities was determined based on their need for natural light. Those for which access to natural light is essential or beneficial were placed on the periphery of the building, while others, such as sanitary facilities, were integrated into the architectural block located in the center of the building. This pointed architectural block, reminiscent of the outer tip of the building, has also been transformed into a focal point with the addition of a wall dedicated to volunteers, whose names are displayed on backlit glass panels visible from the entrance.
The Guy-Dupré Multifunctional Center project was itself a multitude of small projects within a larger one. In fact, many separate interventions had to be made in order to optimize all the spaces according to their uses and make them, as the name of the center suggests, multifunctional. We were fortunate to have the unconditional support of the project team and to be able to develop an inspiring space that is suitable for both young and old and, above all, puts volunteers at its heart.
