The Fernand-Séguin Ecological Center, located in Châteauguay, is a LEED Silver-certified public building. This pavilion is a multifunctional gathering place that serves the community and is highly valued by its residents. The challenge was to develop a pavilion for outdoor enthusiasts that would also be able to provide a wide variety of services to the population and its diverse users.
Serving schools, birdwatchers, wildlife observers, and hikers alike, the building also had to be able to accommodate groups and offer spaces for rent for receptions.
The center, built on a single floor with limited space, is a building packed with features. It includes, among other things, a ski rental and waxing area, a deployable module to create a catering space, and a terrace adjacent to the cafeteria that also serves as a gathering place. Particular attention was paid to the choice of materials and built-in furniture. Punctuated with raw steel accents, the Russian cherry plywood furniture creates a connection with nature, while protecting it from heavy use by the public.

This project was a unique opportunity to take advantage of the space’s proximity to the outdoors. The focal point is the central fireplace. Natural light from the surroundings has been maximized to give the impression of being outside while remaining indoors. Each space has been optimized to meet the diverse needs of the location. I am particularly proud of the catering area, which extends from the wooden module next to the fireplace.
