Designed to maximize the view of the mountain next to which it was built, the new St-Hilaire fire station (Station 31) had to be fully equipped. In addition to designing spaces to meet the work needs of employees, this project also had to take into account the needs of firefighters who had to “live” at the station during their hours of service.
Seeking to distinguish the work area from the living area, the choice of finishes and design interventions were made so that the former could be identified by a more contemporary style and the latter, located upstairs, by a more rustic, warm style reminiscent of home.
Contrasts have also been optimized within the workspaces: those located at the front of the St-Hilaire fire station, which are white and naturally very bright, contrast with those leading to the garage, which are dark and enhanced by thoughtful lighting solutions. As a nod to the color typically associated with firefighters, the stairwells have been painted red, a color that is also stimulating and promotes productivity.
The St-Hilaire fire station project combined different requirements and, in the case of several spaces, demanded optimal ergonomics for the rapid execution of tasks. Our primary objectives in this distinctive project, which has been cited as an example for similar projects, were to ensure the fluidity of the spaces despite their differences and to maximize their functionality and durability.
